“Pustak Pariyojana”is a prison library establishment and reform project in Nepal. It is an attempt to provide an opportunity for prison inmates to re-track life in the correct pathway, supporting their journey of reintegration into the society. Pustak Pariyojana aims to establish libraries across all the district prisons of Nepal, providing educational and learning opportunities to prison inmates with a hope to prevent recidivism; keeping youths at the center of designing and implementing the project. The time in imprisonment spent reading has a variety of benefits including improved literacy, ability to understand rules and regulations (leading to improved behavior), ability to read books that encourage self-reflection and analysis of one’s emotional state, consciousness of important real-world events, and education that can lead to successful re-entry into society after release.
